I HAVE TO THANK THE GOVERNMENT OF MY STATE

By Salis Muhammad Moriki

It is only in Nigeria, Zamfara state in particular, you see government deliberately playing with the future of its citizens. For good four consecutive years, the state government deliberately refuses to pay WAEC/NECO fees for its students to see and use their results secure admissions into various tertiary institutions we have in this country.

The state is already four years educationally backward among its contemporaries despite being in the list of educationally disadvantaged states. In fact, the state always comes last or second to the last in all the examinations bodies charts, even behind war devastated states like Borno and Yobe due to the lackadaisical and nonchalant approach towards the sector by those in authority because their wards never attend public schools.

At present, Zamfara state is the least represented in the federal civil service with less than 600 people, in spite of population above 4 million. Representation in the federal civil service and other DAs goes hand in hand with the level of education of your people. If things continue going this way, in few years to come, even NYSC authority would find no one from Zamfara to perform the service, because no student from the state graduates from any of the universities or polytechnics we have. This is not to talk of filling our quota by other states, as already being practiced in many of the MDAs. I think this policy should be wiped out to allow parents (those who can afford) to pay examinations fees for their children since the government cannot continue with it.

Now that our people are living at more than 90% poverty level according to UN survey, and we are not among the 13 states mentioned and thanked by the president for their giant strides in agricultural revolution, at the same time, none of our students from public schools will secure admission into tertiary institutions in four consecutive years for failure of government to pay for their exams fees, we are gradually becoming parasite in the contemporary Nigerian corporate existence.

Thank you my government.
