ZAMFARA’S FOOD AND NUTRITION POLICY TACKLES MALNUTRITION, SAYS NGO

A Non Governmental Organisation (NGO) ‘’Save the Children International’’ Zamfara State office said Zamfara state is to develope its Food and Nutrition Policy as part of efforts to address nutrition challenges in the state.

The Advocacy and Communications Officer of the Save the Children, Mr. Isah Ibrahim made the disclosure during a statekeholders nutrition draft policy validation meeting of Zamfara 2017 National Nutrition week held in Gusau.

According to him, the document provides a framework aimed at addressing the problems of food and nutrition insecurity in the state.
He stated that the policy would guide the identification, design, and implementation of intervention activities across different relevant sectors, stressing that “Nutrition is multi-sectoral and multi-disciplinary issue involving various sectors including health, agriculture, science and technology, education, commerce, industry, information and economy.”

The NGO further stated that the Policy takes a comprehensive approach to addressing the issues related to Nutrition in the state, adding that it is a multi-sectoral plan that requires joint implementation by the various related MDAs that includes Ministries of Budget and Economic planning, Agriculture, Health, Women Affairs, Education, Information, Rural and Community Development and Local government and Chieftaincy Affairs.

“The goal of this policy is to attain optimal nutritional status for the residents of Zamfara state, with particular emphasis on the most vulnerable groups such as children, adolescents, women, the elderly, and groups with special nutritional needs as well as contributing to the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs),” said the NGO.
